Jesus was not taken by surprise by Judas’s treachery. Long before that night He had said regarding him, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?” (John 6:70). All aspects of Christ’s death—including Judas’s betrayal—were part of God’s predetermined plan (Acts 2:23).
